Why Powder Coating? It is the most exciting and advanced finishing method available. POWDER COATING applies a protective and decorative finish to a wide range of materials and products that are used by both industry and consumer. It's the fastest growing finishing technology in North America, representing 10% (80% in Europe) of all industrial finishing applications. It is used on architectural building materials, extrusions for windows, doors, light poles, guard rails, signs, sign posts, fencing, and from computer and car parts to "I" Beams and nuts and bolts. Powders come in a huge variety of colors, glosses, textures, hammer-tones, veins, metallic, and even clears. Powder coated surfaces are more resistant to chipping, cracking, peeling, scratching, fading, and wearing than other finishes. Environmentally Friendly! The CLEAN AIR ACT OF 1970 propelled the powder coating process to the forefront as a method to reduce air pollution by eliminating Volatile Organic Compounds or VOC's. These ecological advantages continue to drive powder coating's growth and acceptance as the process is safer and cleaner than systems using solvent-based paints. No VOC emissions are released to the atmosphere. Powder coating is now accepted and specified as the BEST AVAILABLE CONTROL TECHNOLOGY (BACT) to reduce air pollution. WE ADHERE TO ALL POWDER COATING INSTITUTE (PCI) STANDARDS and the process starts with proper metal preparation, the key and most important aspect of powder coating. The pretreatment consists of cleaner/iron phosphate applied at ±160º F at 1000 psi, followed by a deionized rinse and a final sealer rinse. Next we proceed to our oven (9'W x 10'H x 25'L) for drying off the pretreated material or an out-gassing bake off prior to the actual powder coating. After the pieces cool down they are hung on special racks. The next step is the actual coating process. The powder, a mixture of finely ground particles consisting of pigments and resins, is charged electro-statically and applied to the grounded product. The product is then placed in the oven to cure. The oven is monitored for correct cure time based on the manufacturer's recommendations. Here in the oven the powder melts and flows on the metal and becomes a smooth coating that is uniform, durable and of high quality. The product cools, is checked for the correct mil thickness, safety wrapped and made ready for pick up.
